Dr. Mark D.
Westfall, D.O., FACEP, FACP
Health
Informatics

Dr Mark
Westfall grew up in a number of small towns throughout the
Midwest (Franklin, Indiana; Northfield, Minnesota;
Kalamazoo, Michigan; and Macomb, Illinois, where he attended
college at Western Illinois University). WIU is also where
he studied to become a paramedic and CPR instructor. From
there, he moved to the Chicago area to attend medical school
at the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine. Soon after
starting medical school, Dr Westfall recognized a
significant problem: people were hesitating to provide the
lifesaving technique of mouth-to-mouth resuscitation during
CPR due to the fear of disease transmission. Such hesitation
often had the direst of consequences. As a result, he
developed the CPR Microshield, a protective face shield.
Since then, he has been the co-holder of a design patent for
this internationally marketed product that provides
protection for people who give lifesaving CPR. After
receiving his doctorate, he attended Northwestern
University, McGraw Medical Center for Residencies in
Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine. It was during his
residency in Internal Medicine that he started utilizing a
computer assisted medical record to track his patients and
their health care. This experience laid the foundation for
SynChart. He has been in practice over ten years, including
several years of service in the United States Army. While in
the service he received training as a flight surgeon and
attended the Army’s Airborne and Air Assault qualification
schools. Dr Westfall achieved the rank of major and was
awarded the Army’s Meritorious Service Medal upon discharge.
He currently practices Emergency Medicine in Neenah,
Wisconsin. In addition to his Emergency Medicine practice,
he serves as the medical director for Gold Cross Ambulance
service. He is board certified in Emergency Medicine and a
Fellow with both the American College of Emergency Medicine
and the American College of Physicians. His professional
memberships include: The American Medical Association, the
American Osteopathic Association, the American College of
Emergency Medicine, the American College of Physicians and
the National Association of Emergency Medical Service
Physicians. He has published several articles, original
research, and chapters in two textbooks. His past experience
has led lead to the development of the SynChart personal
health record system. The Senteras team believes it will
have significant impact on health care.
